FULL BIO
Joe Duffy has been handicapping sports literally since childhood. A native of suburban Philadelphia, he became spellbound with picking against the spread winners when the Philadelphia Inquirer ran a contest in which professional touts picked five NFL games a week for the entire season.
Using the same point spreads the touts did, Duffy also selected five games a week as an armchair participant. The first year he beat every official contestant by several games. It was that moment that he became obsessed.
He continued his pre-teen hobby of being a “fantasy handicapper” in that challenge and always finishing near the top or at the top annually. In grade school through high school, Duffy was a loyal listener to Mickey Charles weekend handicapping shows on WCAU-AM.
Charles program had the professional handicappers of the late 1970s and early 80s. Duffy absorbed all the theories of Mike Lee, Lem Banker, and many others in nerdish fashion even taking notes.
Perhaps not so coincidently, several years later, he got his first opportunity to monetize his wunderkind talents in the sports handicapping industry with the company Charles owned. Joe got his formal start in sports betting as a scorephone announcer for Dial Sports 976 scorephones, paying his way through college. He was a play-by-play announcer for California University of PA’s radio and TV stations for four years.
Upon graduation, he immediately became of full-time handicapper and scorephone announcer for the free scorephones, further studying the trade under legendary broadcaster turned handicapper Ray Scott, and former NFL head coach turned handicapper Hank Stram.
Scott received the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000. Stram was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003. Both were early mentors and enormous influences on Duffy.
He later became General Manager of the Freescoreboard toll-free national scorephones. Duffy is among the most published authors in sports betting strategy, podcaster, and video guest and host.
During the 1980s scorephone days, Duffy’s fellow scorephone announces bestowed to him the nickname, “Mr. March” for his domination of conference tournaments and NCAA Tournament. He has since been called, “The Lord of the Big Dance” having had a winning March Madness every year since 1998.
He is now the leading handicapper of advanced analytics, exploiting statistically significant computer systems and betting formulas. He has been featured by ESPN, written for Bleacher Report, and appeared as an expert guest in radio shows, podcasts, TV networks, and videos around the world.
