Carolina Hurricanes (24-15-2) vs Toronto Maple Leafs (27-13-2)
Thursday, January 09, 2025 at 7:30 pm
At 7:35 pm, our selection is on the Carolina Hurricanes over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs are on a five-game win streak coming into tonight's important match-up in Raleigh. But it's important to note that all five of those wins came against losing teams: a home-and-home sweep against the 15-25 Islanders, a home win vs. the 20-23 Bruins, and then another home-and-home sweep against Philadelphia (17-24). So it's safe to say that tonight is a big step-up against the third-place Hurricanes. With the serious knee injury to #1 goalie Frederik Andersen, young Pyotr Kochetkov has risen to the occasion, and is clearly the guy in net for Carolina right now. The 25-year-old finished 4th in Calder (Rookie of the Year) voting last season and was the highest-ranked netminder in that category. So far this season, he is picking up where he left off with a 2.50 GAA, .902 saves pct and 15-9-1 record in 26 games. This is the first meeting of these two clubs this season and the 'Canes have won each of the last four against the Leafs going back to March of 2023. Take Carolina. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
