Illinois Fighting Illini -29
The Jackson State Tigers will travel to the State Farm Center to take on the 11th ranked Illinois Fighting Illini and I’m liking the Fighting Illini to open their season with a blowout win and cover this large home spread.
Jackson State is a decent SWAC team, however, this is a team that struggled last season in their non-conference schedule, losing to top-tier D-I talent by an average of 24.6 ppg, including losing to Ole Miss by 35 points. Jackson State brings back some experience, however, will be missing their best piece from last year’s team in SWAC player of the Year, Tristan Jarrett, who averaged over 21.0 ppg for the Tigers.
Illinois lost one of the better players in all of College Basketball in Ayo Dosunmu, however, the Fighting Illini are loaded once again, led by arguably the best big man in the country in Kofi Cockburn who averaged a double-double last season. Illinois has plenty of experience returning to the lineup and should once again be one of the higher scoring teams in College Basketball after averaging 80.5 ppg last season.
The Tigers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games, however, are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Tuesday games. The Fighting Illini are 8-2ATS in their last 10 Tuesday games and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
Illinois was able to beat up on the weaker non-conference teams last season as they defeated North Carolina A&T & Chicago State by an average of over 60.0 ppg while also taking care of Drexel by a 29-point margin in the NCAA Tournament and as I see Illinois having no trouble putting up a ton of points against the Tigers, I’m taking Illinois to cover this large spread. Good Luck!
