The Pirates are playing better than expected this season, but they’ve still got a long way to go if they’re going to hang with the better teams in the NL Central like the Cardinals. John Gant isn’t the most dominant pitcher in the world, but he’s got a St. Louis team behind him that’s owned the Pirates over the years, winning 16 of the last 21 meetings and a dominant 15 of the last 18 meetings between the two in Pittsburgh.
