Grande Valley was ravaged by injuries and COVID-related issues last season. Indeed, there were nights when head coach Matt Figger only had 6-7 scholarship players available. Figger used the transfer portal to bring much-needed talent and depth to Edinburg but the Vaqueros’ success this season begins with senior Justin Johnson, who led the team in scoring last season (4th in the WAC). Johnson is averaging a team-high 19.0 points per game on 47.4% shooting from the field and is joined by Weber State graduate transfer Dima Zdor, a 6-foot-10 forward who is second in both scoring (11.6 ppg) and rebounds (5.3 rpg). Junior college transfer Will Johnston has made an immediate in the backcourt where he is averaging 11.4 points (50.0% FG; 47.6% 3-PT) and 3.7 assists per game. Grande Valley’s talented backcourt also added Western Kentucky transfer Sherman Brashear, who is contributing 6.3 points and 3.9 rebounds across 21.4 minutes per game. Grande Valley enters off a 91-54 loss to Texas, which is significant in that the Vaqueros are 7-2-1 ATS in their last ten games following a loss by 20-plus points and 7-0-1 ATS in their last eight games off an against-the-spread loss. Finally, my math model only favors Texas A&M Corpus by 4.6 points in this game so grab the inflated number with the Vaqueros and invest with confidence.
